Doksany Observatory

Czech Hydrometeorological Institute

Drought monitoring

Research

Doksany observatory is administrator of agrometeorological measurement within the CHMI. It also provides development and testing of automatic measurement systems (for example small water level evaporation measurement, evapotranspiration measurement, soil moisture measurement, soil temperature measurement, freezing of soil measurement), which enhance quality of measuring data. Also, pilot project of monitoring of phenological phases by digital camera has been initiated. Its purpose is, alongside objectification of observation, also verifying the possibility of automatization of phenonological observations. On the observatory, fire danger warning model is being developed, based upon evaluation of weather conditions. The model defines five levels of risk: 1 – very low risk, 2 – low risk, 3 – medium risk, 4 – high risk, 5 – very high risk. Input data into the model presents measured values from the net of CHMI observation stations, and the ALADIN model predicted values. During the processing, the model computes soil moisture of upper profile, surface moisturing, and the speed of spread of fire. In cooperation with academic institutions, the staff of the observatory is participates in granted projects (Drought monitoring, climate change, agrometeorological model, etc.). Results of the research are being presented both on national and international conferences and also in scientific paper.
